A Formal Analysis of "Hotel Transylvania"

1. The Story

a. List of Characters and their roles:
  • Dracula - the vampire father of Mavis.
  • Mavis - the daughter of Dracula who wants to meet people. She fell in love to Jonathan.
  • Jonathan - the adventurous human in the story who stumbles at  Hotel Transylvania.
  • Frankenstein and  Eunice - couple friends of Dracula who were invited to Mavis' 118th birthday.
  • Wayne and Wanda, the werewolves -  couple friends of Dracula who were invited to Mavis' 118th birthday.
  • Griffin, the invisible man - an invisible friend of Dracula who is invited to Mavis' 118th birthday.
  • Murray, the mummy -  the sandman friend of Dracula who is also invited to Mavis' 118th birthday.
  • The Bigfoot -  the foot friend of Dracula who is also invited to Mavis' 118th birthday.
b. Setting:
  • The story happens in evening at the Hotel Transylvania. The hotel can be found at the middle of the scary forest. It also happens before the 118th birthday of Mavis where everyone are busy preparing.
c. Plot Summary:

Exposition: Dracula raises his daughter alone so he builds a hotel called hotel Transylvania where he could keep safe and protect his daughter. The hotel also offers the monsters a place for vacation away from humans because, for them, humans are cruel to monsters.

Rising Action: Dracula won’t allow his daughter named Mavis, see and meet humans. But destiny comes into view and makes Dracula surprised that a twenty-one year old tourist stumbles into the hotel by accident and he has to hide the human named Jonathan in order for his friends and guests of the hotel not to be afraid and panic. 

Climax: When Mavis feels the zing to Jonathan, but it’s too late. Jonathan walks away and made up his mind to go back to his place as what Dracula wants him to do.

Falling Action: Dracula and his friends chase Jonathan on his flight for the sake of Mavis’ happiness.

Denouement: The 118th birthday party of Mavis becomes successfully celebrated. After which, Jonathan and Mavis also got married and they live happily ever after.

a. What characterizes the movie as typical cartoon?
  • The movie is characterize as a typical cartoon because just like any typical fairy tale love stories, it ends with a happy ending story between two people from different world.
